Peer Advisor

Students who complete fall & spring semester of the BlockU experience (3 core classes each semester) are eligible to apply for the position of BlockU Peer Advisor. If selected as Peer Advisor, you will be assigned to mentor the freshman entering your specific BlockU area.

Mandatory Peer Advisor commitments include:

  • Attend BlockU Learning Community Course each time it meets fall and spring semester and check in with Learning Community Course faculty regularly
  • Attend twice-a-month peer advisor meetings, held on Tuesdays at 3:00 PM
  • Assist in at least 11 of the 13 freshman summer orientations listed below; you will receive additional pay for every orientation you attend
    1. June 1: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    2. June 6: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    3. June 8: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    4. June 12: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    5. June 15: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    6. June 20: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    7. June 22: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    8. June 26: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    9. June 28: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    10. July 10: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    11. July 13: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    12. July 18: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    13. July 20: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM

General Peer Advisor Responsibilities:

  • Help BlockU students with their transition to the University
  • Be available to BlockU students outside the classroom setting
  • Organize and lead study groups
  • Assist the professor in workshops and discussions, reading and commenting on student papers in draft stage, and occasionally present class material
  • Participate in BlockU projects and activities outside of class
  Employment Term:  Fall and Spring semesters of 2017-2018 academic year
  Hours: 8-10 hours per week
  Salary: $1,000 per semester

Selection Criteria:

  • GPA of 3.25 or higher
  • Full-time student (15 or more credit hours)
  • Strong writer
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to participate in class discussions and facilitate group work
  • Student who models good citizenship behavior
  • Responsible and able to meet deadlines
  • Can commit to being a Peer Mentor for the entire year

Students who have completed a full year as a BlockU Peer Advisor (or fulfilled other Leadership roles, such as Capstone Coordinator, New University Scholar Peer Mentor) are eligible to apply for the position of Sr. Peer Advisor. As a Sr. Peer Advisor, you will be responsible for co-teaching/facilitating a bi-weekly one-hour seminar to all BlockU Peer Advisors. This seminar meets during fall and spring semesters.

Mandatory Sr. Peer Advisor commitments include:

  • Lead bi-weekly peer mentor meetings on Tuesday at 3:00 PM
  • Assist in at least 9 of the 13 freshman summer orientations listed below; you will receive additional pay for every orientation you attend
    1. June 1: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    2. June 6: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    3. June 8: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    4. June 12: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    5. June 15: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    6. June 20: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    7. June 22: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    8. June 26: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM
    9. June 28: 10:45-11:30 AM, 2:00-5:00 PM

General Sr. Peer Advisor Responsibilities:

  • Support peer advisors with regards to their mentoring responsibilities
  • Be available to peer advisors outside the classroom setting
  • Initiate activities and projects that will help peer advisors be successful in their mentoring and in their classes.

  Hours: 8-10 hours per week
  Salary: $1,000 per semester
